Power Hour by Adrienne Hender was the perfect audiobook for the beginning of a new year. This audiobook is packed with great advice about how to set goals, review your habits and optimize your time. Adrienne Herbert’s method revolves around getting up early, which is a challenge for me as a night owl but also incredibly exciting. My family’s schedule is not ideal so getting up at dawn makes sense. But, it’s not clear if a long-term shift in my waking hours will be possible. More on this later. ).
SYNOPSIS
A book on making the most out of the first hour, and how to follow your passions and succeed.
How many times have we heard, “I would love to do that but I don’t have the time”? The Power Hour message is simple. We all have an hour to build the life we desire, regardless of whether or not we believe we do.
Power Hour will teach you how to use the first hour of your morning to reach your goals. This is before everyone else wakes up and begins to compete for your attention. It will teach you how to reclaim your time, unlock your potential and create powerful habits. It will help you realize that you can always make a difference and live a life that you love.
Don’t wait for the right moment or more time. Begin with one hour right now.
THE STORY BEHIND THE POWER HOURS
Adrienne Herbert tells her story before she shares her tips. It is as powerful and inspiring as her personal development strategy. Her podcast is very popular and I enjoyed listening to it. Then, she shares the sad story of her miscarriage. This loss inspired her to create the Power Hour. She ran a marathon in order to continue moving forward with her life.
The most striking thing about Adrienne Herberts was her drive. Adrienne Herberts’s conviction strength is extraordinary, but it doesn’t diminish the book. It was a great benefit to have someone to mentor you, and it shines through her narration.
PREPARING FOR CHANGE
Six chapters make up the Create Your Own Power Hour.
- Mindset is the Power of Mindset
- How to create powerful habits
- The Power of Movement
- The Power of Sleep
- The Power of People
- The Power of Purpose
The author suggests that you can listen to them in any order. However, I listened to them according to the format in the book. Each refers to a variety of personal development approaches, practitioners (I assume Adrienne Herbert has heard many of these authors through her podcasts). These summary helped me to understand the main message of the book and gave me an insight into any other books I might like.
After I had finished Power Hour I was eager to give it a try. A lack of focus at end of audiobook was the only thing that hampered the overall direction. Instead of focusing on one goal, the author seemed to have used the first hour to do exercise. This is fine, but it seems to distract from the goal of doing something truly amazing.
MY PERSONAL OUTCOME
This is where I must be brutally honest!
After finishing Power Hour I woke up every morning at 5.30am and did a lot of work for the first two weeks. I got on the exercise bike, and began working on a personal project. It was just as useful as Adrienne claimed it would be.
The down side? The downside? A lack of sleep. I didn’t get enough sleep, even though I went to bed at 10 p.m. I was unable to settle down and I slept for 5 hours each night. Add homeschooling and two other jobs to the mix, it was impossible to continue at the same pace until things settled down.
But four weeks later, I am ready to give it another go. I will be using a more rigid regime this time. In April, I will report on my progress!
